Proverbs 3:19  The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.

A surface level understanding of this verse is to say that wisdom is so great that even God uses wisdom in His workings.  That is essentially the point of the verse in the context of the chapter.

We are being convinced how important wisdom is to our lives, and what greater argument is there than to say “even God uses wisdom”.  If God needed wisdom to found the earth, then why wouldn’t you need it in your daily life?  However, there is more to the verse.

Have you paused to think of how complex the universe is?  The human eye alone is infinitely complex.  The strands of your DNA hold more information than the libraries of men could ever accumulate.  We have scarcely begun to understand our universe, and not for a lack of trying.  Scientists devote their entire lives to trying to understand just some small aspect of it.  Yet, God was able to put His knowledge and understanding into practice to create a universe that functions perfectly well.

Are you aware of how minutely the changing of even one universal force would result in all life ceasing exist? There was literally no margin for error in the work of creation.  Everything had to be designed to function perfectly from the first try. There is no room for an animal like the bombardier beetle to practice until they learned how to combine their explosive chemicals. One failure would have exterminated the species. Without God’s wisdom coded into the design, none of this could exist.

This earth was built upon the wisdom of God, shouldn’t your life be also?

As someone who worked as a machinist, I can tell you that the most complex step in building something is usually engineering it.  Anyone, with the right tools and a little training, can cut a piece of metal.  It takes a greater knowledge and understanding of mechanics though, to make it suitable for mechanical use. How many teeth will each gear need in order to turn at the exact right timing? How about the diameter of the gear? Will it be strong enough to rotate whatever it is connected to? There are so many things one has to understand just to build a little gear box.

Sometimes, when something is too complex for even an engineer, it is necessary to just try whatever you think is best, and experiment until you figure it out. That is when the scientist has to come in and study the matter further, to try to understand it.

The point is that man, even with the best education available, and all the wisdom he can have, struggles to understand even the basic things in this universe. Yet, our God understood it so well, He could speak it into existence.  No experimentation, no hypothesis, no research, and no guessing.  He got it right the first time, because He already understood it all.

That’s incredible when you consider it. Men devote their entire lives to trying to understand what to God is already understood. So, when He ask us to lean not unto our own understanding, but to trust Him; it should be easy to trust the one whose understanding far exceeds even the greatest of men.
