Proverbs 2:9 Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.
We said in chapter one that sound wisdom consists of three main parts: justice, judgment, and equity. If we are going to be instructed in or taught wisdom, then we have to understand these three things. Proverbs 1:3, “To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity”
We notice in verse 2:9 that justice has been replaced by righteousness; however, the idea is still the same. In 1:3, Justice refers to a moral compass. Here it is presented as an understanding of what is right.
We are promised that if we will seek it out, God will not only protect us through this sound wisdom, but He will also give us understanding. This understanding is how God will build or develop wisdom in our hearts. He will do this by giving us a proper understanding of each of the building blocks that make up sound wisdom.
If we can understand right and wrong, then we will be able to use knowledge aright, that is sound wisdom. If we can understand proper judgment then we will not let partiality, hypocrisy, or any other thing corrupt our judgment. This will allow us to judge righteous judgment, and discern the best way to apply knowledge. If we understand equity, this will help us to take our own feelings out of the equation. It will allow us to use our knowledge honestly and not to corrupt it just to win an argument. Equity will keep us honest in how we apply our knowledge. These understandings will grow wisdom in our hearts and help us understand every good path.
