Proverbs 2:07 He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.
Here is where we conclude that the term “sound wisdom” refers to the wisdom which is from above, as is mentioned in James chapter three. Consider the context: we are told this sound wisdom is the wisdom that God gives us when we look to Him and His Word. That means it is genuinely wisdom from above, or from God; unlike those earthly, sensual, or devilish wisdoms from below.
This same phrase, “sound wisdom”, is used two other times in Proverbs to discuss this kind of wisdom. Sound in this sense, means something that is dependable, secure, healthy, or right. While the word can have other meanings, that is typically how it is used in the Bible when not referring to an audible noise.
We can see this word in a different context in Proverbs 14:30 “A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.” Here "sound" refers to a healthy and dependable heart as being the life of the flesh, in contrast to how envy rots us from the inside.
This understanding of the word is supported by the second half of our verse as well. God's giving sound wisdom to the righteous is presented as a counterpart to Him also protecting the upright as a shield. So, this sound wisdom is a shield to those who live it out by walking uprightly. That means “Sound wisdom” is referring to right or righteous wisdom; the kind of wisdom that will dependably secure your health. This is the kind of wisdom in which you can always trust.
