Proverbs 2:06 For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.
The reason any honest search for wisdom will lead to God is really quite simple, it is God alone who gives us true wisdom. We have noted many times before that God Invites us to ask Him for wisdom. Just look at James 1:5 “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” God promises to not reproach us if we ask. Instead, He promises these sweet words if we ask “it shall be given”.
Who could attest to this better than Solomon, the man who asked God for wisdom to rule God’s people. As a result of his request, God gave him wisdom and much more. Solomon testifies to this from his own personal experience in Ecclesiastes 2:26, where he says, “For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom”. Solomon is not offering an empty promise, but he speaks from his own understanding of God and his own experiences with God.
Colossians 2:3 tells us that, concerning God, in Him “are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” He has told you that to have those treasures, you must search His Word as a treasure map. Each page will lead you closer to Him, the source where true wisdom is hidden.
Job also understood that “With him is wisdom and strength, he hath counsel and understanding” (Job 12:13). Will you come to this understanding as well? He is the God who is “only wise” as we see in Romans 16:27. There is no other fountain to which you can go for sound wisdom.
There are two ways to understand the statement "God gives wisdom." First, as we said of understanding, wisdom is a matter of the heart, a muscle in your soul the that can be exercised and grown. It is no problem for God to produce wisdom in the heart of someone who fears Him. Verse ten expresses this truth when it says, “When wisdom entereth into thine heart”.
Proverbs 14:23 helps us to connect this to the second aspect of how God gives wisdom. “Wisdom resteth in the heart of him that hath understanding:”. This second way is clearly expressed both in this passage and in our text passage.
God’s Word, which He has spoken to us, is the perfect source of knowledge and understanding. You want to know the truth? Just look at the Bible. It is the truth given to us by God Himself. You want to understand the truth? Again, look to His Word.
If we will get into God’s Word and let it get into us, it brings not just knowledge and understanding of God; but of everything we could ever need to know or understand. That is why God has given us His Word, first to draw us to Him, but also to teach us everything He wants us to know about this life and beyond.
