Proverbs 2:02 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;
The second thing we must do if we are to be wise, is to apply our hearts to understanding. Understanding is a matter of the heart and not the mind. It is a muscle in your soul, that can be exercised to be strengthened and grow.
In Proverbs 14:33 and 15:14, we are told of “the heart of him that hath understanding”, while in Proverbs 8:5 we are told to be of an “understanding heart”. Wisdom and understanding are both matters of the heart. Applying our hearts to understanding means we are to give our hearts to this. We are to exercise the understanding in our heart by making it our goal to understand things.
Have you given your heart to understand God’s Word and His wisdom? You can, and if you do, you will certainly increase in learning. Just be careful to whom or what you have inclined your ear, so that you might come to a proper understanding.
For example, the one who has bowed their ear to earthly wisdom will see that animals are not typically monogamists, and use this to attack biblical marriage. Their submission to such things will also build an appreciation for them and will often lead to the choice to be vegan. Yet, they ignore how those same animals eat their own young, kill other animals who impose on their territory, forcibly mate, and many other awful things that contradict their worldview. Why? Because they bowed their ear to an authority that is not a reliable source of understanding.
We must be careful to bow our ears to God for good understanding.
