Proverbs 1:5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:
A Wise Man Will Listen and Learn
The charge of this verse, is one that is a definitive declaration - a wise man will hear.
There is no question about it, if there is wisdom contained in one’s heart, it produces a willingness to listen. Something we are also reminded in the book of James “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:” It is when we pause, to take in what information is given to us; that we can increase in learning.
All of us, in our journey to learn, need to stop looking for opportunity to interject our thoughts, and be more willing to let others speak. This context, more importantly tells us if we are wise, we will listen to what God is saying in this book. This characteristic of the wise man, is one that is regularly discussed throughout the book Proverbs.
That the more wisdom reigns in our heart, the more inquisitive we become; and especially in regard to listening to God’s Word.
This is also true of understanding, when it is found in a heart; it produces a desire to better understand the world around us. The man of understanding, will then take time to reach out, and study what counsel or advice is given to him.
It is for these two reasons wisdom and understanding are absolutely necessary to our study of God’s Word. Because one allows us to be quiet and listen to what God is saying; while the other drives us to search it out, and try to understand each word.
